Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived to a musical family 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter to the singing sensation Dionne. In her early years, she sang in her New Hope Baptist Church choir in Newark. By the time she turned fifteen, Houston was singing professionally with backing vocals alongside her mother on Chaka Khan's hit song in 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she briefly was a model and appeared on the Seventeen album cover. She also performed back vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. Her vocals with the New York-based group Material brought attention to major record labels which included Arista. They signed her with Arista in 1983 and spent the remainder of her career. The album she released as her debut Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and became the biggest-selling album by a debut artist. Singles such as The Greatest Love of All, How Will I Know If You Give Good Love or Save all My Love were all released from the album. They helped Houston to achieve the seven US top tens that surpassed even those of The Beatles. The album sold 3 million copies its first year, and 25 million globally. Her first six Grammys. Its Whitney 1987 release, featuring The album's tracks, such as Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as popular songs, was a way to build on the successes she'd had. But the 1992 film The Bodyguard sealed her spot among the top-selling musicians ever. The Bodyguard's performance as a film and soundtrack was not well-received however, her Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You and The Bodyguard album that accompanied it topped charts around the globe for several months. The same year, she was married the former New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she has a single child Bobbi Kristina Brown, born in March 1993. Around this time her use of drugs became well documented and she began using daily until 1996.
